Removed the side panel and the oil fittings this afternoon... As I want to get the oil lines out of the way before I snap them by mistake. Better review the engine tear down video and refresh myself with the three bolts on the bottom of the block. I'm not much of an engine guy so I want to be extremely careful. Once I get the oil lines out, the ignition system off, and can completely drain the oil pan to evaluate extracting the clutch and cable(?)... THEN the fins will come off to work on the pistons, rings and cylinders...... Scary stuff for me!

Used Gunk Engine Shine and Degreaser to get the majority of crud off the upper fins. Removed the sparkplugs and the bolts to remove the top. I am happy to report that the plugs and bolts came off nicely. But what the hell do i do with these pistons? Are they ok? Do I need to pull apart more? Perhaps i will clean up the uppers, remount and really get this bugger clean top and botton before I tear down any further.
What do you think? This thing is dirty! ... here's the underside of the engine... And I cannot get a couple of the case screws out! It is almost like they are glued! The gasket needs to come off... and i might need a new cover plate... cracked. UPDATE: Acquired an impact driver and figured out how to use it. Screws came out like butter. :-) Everything looks great under the covers. I don't like the goop used under the cover plate - But I don't think it needs a real "gasket". Just something to keep the dust out. Now to clean the underside and explore a little more. I disconnected the oil-regulator/carb cables so that makes it easier. :-) |
