3 hours to disassemble and clean up the rear drum brake cover.
|
This is the first carb I have ever opened. I know nothing... but they look pretty good for 49 years old... The floats seem to be free, there doesn't seem too much old varnish and the adjustments are free. Update: Measured the floats. Easily within spec so thats good.... but the gaskets are done!... Trying to find gaskets for this beast is like looking for peanuts in a peanut free zone. |
A pic of some of the cleaned up bits from this Morning...
I had the cylinders measured for variation at Larry's. They seem to be in acceptable shape.
Sooo... I have ordered some standard bore rings. I'll get Larry to hone the cylinder walls next and then I can reassemble the engine components once the rings arrive.
Note to self:
Better find out where all the seals are and inspect them as well as the gaskets!
- Cleaned the chain! It seems to be in pristine condition.
- Also cleaned the rear wheel sprocket - the teeth are like new.
- The fork tubes are pretty good... so new seals are on the way too.
- I have started looking at the seat upholstery, and need to find some decent foam;
Covers can be ordered fairly easily.
Next on the agenda:
1) Fully clean the frame, and paint it with some high gloss HARD paint.
Someone suggested "brake paint".
2) It's simple to check the headlight, taillight and signal bulbs;
But I need to decide on repairing or purchasing the headlight housing.
3) Steering bearing/damper seems fine; But probably needs a fresh grease pack.
4) De-gunked the left exhaust pipe. Some very minor surface rust! vroom vroom.
4) Oh yeah... The handlebars are bent...
What I was worried were cracks in the oil pan seem to be just casting flaws.
Thanks to the folks at Suzuki 2 Strokes and Larry's Cycle for taking a look.
So thats great!
The side panels are going to clean up nicely too.
The left side panel is cleaning up nicely. Not completed yet but it'll work.
It was bound to happen!
Took the cylinders and pistons to Larry and he agrees they look good.
Finally exposed the underside of the engine, and started cleaning to see what was what! Discovered a crack in the aluminum between the three oil drain bolts!
Some disappointment ensued! I think this engine is toast... Any different opinions?
There is a great community online ,and at least 3 other bikes in the region being restored...so I'll reach out to them for some expertise.

So much for waiting. I realized that once the head is off the block just pulls up over the cylinders... So that's what I did.
Other than a pile of carbon on the piston heads the cylinders and pistons look OK... To my eye they aren't scored at all and the rings look fine. But I'll get a second opinion.
Do I need to clear the carbon off the piston heads?
How do I get the heads off the arm? The 2 snap-rings are out but the elbow pin just doesn't want to slide out!

Removed the side panel and the oil fittings this afternoon... As I want to get the oil lines out of the way before I snap them by mistake.
Better review the engine tear down video and refresh myself with the three bolts on the bottom of the block. I'm not much of an engine guy so I want to be extremely careful.
Once I get the oil lines out, the ignition system off, and can completely drain the oil pan to evaluate extracting the clutch and cable(?)... THEN the fins will come off to work on the pistons, rings and cylinders...... Scary stuff for me!

Used Gunk Engine Shine and Degreaser to get the majority of crud off the upper fins. Removed the sparkplugs and the bolts to remove the top. I am happy to report that the plugs and bolts came off nicely. But what the hell do i do with these pistons? Are they ok? Do I need to pull apart more? Perhaps i will clean up the uppers, remount and really get this bugger clean top and botton before I tear down any further.
